FLUPENTHIXOL DECANOATE

It is a pronounced antipsychotic, alerting and anxiolytic effects. Drug effectively relieves hallucinations; delusions and other thought disorders associated with schizophrenia. Ideally suited for long term maintenance of chronic schizophrenics especially apathetic brunt out cases. It has no sedative action.

Indications

Schizophrenia and allied psychoses, especially with symptoms such as apathy, inertia, withdrawal, anxiety and anergy, particularly wherecompliance with oral medication is a problem.


Dosage

Injection: Maint: 20-40 mg (1-2 ml every 2-4 weeks) Orally : Depression : Initially 0.5 mg twice daily. Then adjust dose within range 0.5-3 mg daily. Antipsychotic. Dosage individually adopted. Initially 3 mg daily. Increase gradually to 9-15 mg daily. Max. 40 mg. Maint. 3-12 mg daily.


Contra-Indications

Pregnancy, lactation. Extremely excitable and overactive patients. Acute alcohol, barbiturate & opiate poisoning.


Special Precautions

Driving or operating heavy machinery. Hepatic, renal or cardiovascular disease. Neuroleptics with sedatives. Should be withdrawn gradually. Convulsive disorders. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy & Lactation:Contraindicated. Elderly: The dose have to be reduced.


Side Effects

Dyskinesias, extrapyramidal side effects, neuroleptic malignant syndrome


Drug Interactions

Blocks antihypertensive effect of guanethidine, reduced efficacy of levodopa. Inhibits metabolism of tricyclic anti-depressants, increases adverse extrapyramidal symptoms with dopamine antagonists.
