GAMMA BENZENE HEXACHLORIDE

It is an insecticide, kills lice & mites by penetrating through their chitinous cover and affect the nervous system. It is the drug of choice for pediculosis.

Indications

Scabies. Pediculosis.

Dosage

Apply to scalp & hair (taking care not to enter eyes) and is left for 24 hrs (a polyethylene cover may be used for long hairs) & then washed. If lice is present repeat after 1 wk. Scabies : Apply over the body and a scrub bath is taken fter 12-24 hrs. Can be repeated after 1 wk.

Special Precautions

Do not apply on face. Paediatrics: Use with caution. Pregnancy & Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Safe.

Side Effects

It can irritate the skin. Being highly lipid soluble, systemic absorption and toxicity can occur, leading to CNS stimulation, vertigo, convulsions (especially in children) and cardiac arrhythmias.
