HYDROXYPROGESTERONE

Its main function, like other Progesterone derivatives is preparation of uterus for nidation and maintenance of pregnancy. The latter is probably due to decreased uterine motility and inhibition of immunological rejection of the foetus : progesterone decreases T-cell function and cell mediated immunity.

Indications

Habitual & threatened abortion, infertility due to corpus luteum insufficiency, primary & secondary amenorrhoea, uterine hypoplasia.


Dosage

Habitual abortion : 250-500mg i.m. weekly. Threatened abortion : 500 mg i.m. 2-3 times weekly. Infertility : 250 mg i.m.3 days after rise in basal body temp.


Contra-Indications

History of herpes of pregnancy, previous or existing liver tumours.


Special Precautions

Diabetes. Exclude pregnancy in indications other than thratened or habitual abortion. Intra abdominal haemorrhage due to malignant liver tumours.


Side Effects

G.I. disturbances, weight gain oedema, acne, increased appetite, urticaria, allergic skin rashes, mental depression.


Drug Interactions

Potentiates CNS depression by alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, sedatives and neuroleptics, MAOIs, atropine, and tricyclic antidepressants potentiate antimuscarinic effects. Incompatability with aminophylline, benzylpenicillin, chloramphenicol, sodium-succinate.
