Nalbuphine Hydrochloride dihydrate

Nalbuphine hydrochloride is a synthetic opioid agonist-antagonist analgesic of the phenanthrene series. It is chemically related to both the widely used opioid antagonist, naloxone, and the potent opioid analgesic, oxymorphone. Nalbuphine has been shown to have a low abuse potential.

Indications

Moderate to severe pain, supplement to balanced anesthesia, for preoperative and postoperative analgesia, and as analgesia during labor and delivery.


Dosage

10 mg for a 70 kg individual administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously; this dose may be repeated every 3 to 6 hours as necessary. Dose need to be adjusted according to the severity of pain and indication.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

Impaired respiration, Impaired Renal or Hepatic Function, Myocardial Infarction, Biliary Tract surgery, Fetal Bradycardia is noted during pregnancy. Paediatric: Safety below 18 years not established. Pregnancy: Category B; use if needed. Lactation: Secreted in milk, use with caution.


Side Effects

Sedation, sweaty/clammy, nausea/vomiting, dizziness/vertigo, dry mouth, and headache.


Drug Interactions

Opioid analgesic, general anesthetics, phenothiazines, or other tranquilizers, sedatives, hypnotics, or other CNS depressants.
