Oxymetazoline hydrochloride (HCl) is a topical decongestant commonly used to relieve nasal congestion caused by colds, allergies, or sinusitis. It is available as a nasal spray and works by narrowing blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and congestion.

Indications

Oxymetazoline HCl is indicated for the relief of nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, or sinus infections. It can also be used to relieve eustachian tube congestion and to help with nasal or sinus examination procedures.


Dosage

The recommended dosage for adults and children over 6 years old is usually 2-3 sprays in each nostril every 10 to 12 hours, not exceeding 2 applications in a 24-hour period. The specific dosage may vary depending on the brand and the patient's age. Always follow the dosage instructions provided on the package or prescribed by your healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or any other ingredient in the product. -Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. -Patients with severe cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. -Not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.


Special Precautions

-Long-term use can lead to rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa), so it should not be used for more than 3 consecutive days. -Use with caution in patients with heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or difficulty -urinating due to an enlarged prostate. -Avoid use in or around the eyes. -If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice.


Side Effects

Temporary burning, stinging, or dryness in the nasal passages. Sneezing or runny nose. Less common side effects may include: Elevated blood pressure. Nervousness or dizziness.


Drug Interactions

-Oxymetazoline HCl may interact with other medications such as MAO inhibitors, which can lead to an increase in blood pressure. -Caution is advised when using other sympathomimetic drugs. -If taking other medications, consult your healthcare provider before using oxymetazoline HCl.
