PENFLURIDOL

This medication is a highly potent antipsychotic compound, prescribed for chronic schizophrenia and similar psychotic disorders.

Indications

Chronic schizophrenia, paranoid symptomatology. Social affective withdrawal or mal-adjustment.


Dosage

20-60 mg weekly. Max. : 120 mg.


Contra-Indications

Marked liver impairment.


Special Precautions

Pregnancy, lactation. Not recommended for children. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Use with caution. Elderly: The dose may have to be reduced.


Side Effects

Blood dyscrasias, dry mouth, blurring of vision, psychosis, retention of urine, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, weight gain, allergic skin rash, cholestatic jaundice, orthostatic hypotension, granular deposts in cornea, lens.


Drug Interactions

Antacids decreases absorption, additive antimuscarinic activity with tricyclic antidpressants, orthostatic hypotension with MAOIs. Reverse antihypertensive effect of gaunethidine, methyldopa and clonidine. Additive CNS depression with other CNS depressants (sedative, hypnotics, antihistamines, opiates and alcohol).
