PHENAZOPYRIDINE

It is an orange dye which exerts analgesic action in the urinary tract and affords symptomatic relief of burning sensation, dysuria & urgency due to cystitis. It does not have antibacterial property.

Indications

-Symptomatic relief of pain, burning, urgency, frequency, and discomfort arising from irritation of the lower urinary tract mucosa caused by infection, trauma, surgery, endoscopic procedures, or the passage of catheters. -Relief of urinary tract pain.


Dosage

100-400 mg 3 times daily after meals.


Contra-Indications

Pregnancy, renal impairment. Liver dysfuntion. Glomerular nephritis, uraemia.


Special Precautions

Urine colour becomes orange-red. Prolong use should be avoided. Caution while exceeding the indicated dosage. Paediatrics: Contraindicated in children under 12 years. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Use with caution.


Side Effects

-Headache -Dizziness -Stomach cramps -Reddish-orange discoloration of urine -Methemoglobinemia (rare) -Hemolytic anemia (rare) -Hepatotoxicity (rare) -Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling
