PORK INSULIN

PORK INSULIN

Pork insulin, also known as porcine insulin, is a type of insulin derived from the pancreas of pigs. It is used to manage blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. Pork insulin has a similar structure to human insulin but differs by one amino acid, making it slightly less compatible with human insulin receptors compared to synthetic human insulin.

Indications

-Diabetes mellitus Type 1 -Diabetes mellitus Type 2 in cases where oral medications are insufficient -Gestational diabetes requiring insulin therapy -Diabetic ketoacidosis

Dosage

The dosage of pork insulin is individualized based on the patient’s needs, blood glucose levels, and the advice of a healthcare provider. Typically, it is administered subcutaneously using a syringe, insulin pen, or pump. Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on diet, physical activity, and changes in health status.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to pork insulin or any component of the formulation -Hypoglycemia -Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment

Special Precautions

-Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential. -Patients should be educated on recognizing symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. -Caution is advised when switching from human or other forms of insulin to pork insulin. -Adjustments in dosage may be required during periods of stress, illness, or changes in physical activity.

Side Effects

-Hypoglycemia (most common) -Injection site reactions (redness, swelling, itching) -Weight gain -Lipodystrophy (abnormal distribution of fat at injection sites) -Allergic reactions (rare but may include rash, itching, difficulty breathing)

Drug Interactions

-Other medications affecting blood glucose levels, such as oral hypoglycemics, can potentiate or diminish the effects of pork insulin. -Beta-blockers may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia. -Corticosteroids, diuretics, and thyroid hormones may increase blood glucose levels, requiring dose adjustment. -Alcohol can cause unpredictable blood glucose levels, potentially leading to hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
