Sevelamer

Sevelamer is a non-absorbed phosphate binder used to control hyperphosphatemia (elevated phosphate levels) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It works by binding phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing its absorption into the bloodstream.

Indications

Sevelamer is indicated for the control of serum phosphorus levels in patients with CKD on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.


Dosage

800 to 1600mg, which can be administered as one to two 800mg Tablets or two to four 400mg Tablets with each meal based on serum phosphorus level. Swallow this medication whole; do not crush ro chew this medicines.


Contra-Indications

-Hypophosphatemia (low serum phosphate levels) -Bowel obstruction -Hypersensitivity to sevelamer or any component of the formulation


Special Precautions

Low blood phosphorus levels, bowel obstruction, stomach/intestinal surgeries.


Side Effects

Headache, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, vomiting or constipation.


Drug Interactions

-Sevelamer may interfere with the absorption of other medications, particularly those that are taken concomitantly. It's recommended to administer other drugs at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after sevelamer. -Sevelamer can reduce the absorption of anti-arrhythmic drugs, anti-seizure medications, and some antibiotics. -Vitamin D, E, K, and folic acid supplements may be required due to reduced absorption caused by sevelamer.
