TROPICAMIDE

It is a potent & has the quickest (20-40 mins) onset of action. The duration of action also happens to be the briefest i.e. 6 hours. Both cyclopentolate and tropicamide are capable of producing complete cycloplegia in children but they may show transient behavioural abnormalities due to absorption of the drug after passage into thenasolacrymal duct.

Indications

For mydriasis & cycloplegia in diagnostic procedures. When a short acting mydriatic is needed for some pre & post operative states.


Dosage

1-2 drops or as required.


Contra-Indications

Narrow angle glaucoma, hypersensitivity.


Side Effects

Increased intra ocular pressure (may precipitate narrow-angle glaucoma), systemic anticholinergic effects, severe C.N.S. disturbances in children.
