Global Hospitals in Mumbai Achieve Milestone with Swap Liver Transplant
In a groundbreaking achievement, Global Hospitals, located in Parel, Mumbai, a leading multi-organ transplant facility in Western India, has marked a significant milestone by completing over 800 liver, pancreas, and intestine transplants. This accomplishment is a testament to the hospital's expertise and commitment to advancing medical care in the region.
Under the leadership of Dr. Gaurav Chaubal, Director of the Liver, Pancreas, and Intestine Transplant Programme, along with guidance from Dr. Samir Shah, Director of Liver Disease, HPB Surgery & Transplant, and Dr. Uday Sanglodkar, Senior Consultant Hepatologist, a remarkable feat was achieved with a swap liver transplant. This complex procedure involved two women generously donating a portion of their livers to each other's husbands, both of whom were grappling with end-stage liver disease.
The patients, Mr. Ramdas Chavan and Mr. Dinesh Sarode, were facing severe health challenges due to liver failure. Despite coming from different backgrounds and facing unique medical histories, both individuals had been eagerly awaiting a transplant for over a year.
Dr. Chaubal explained the intricacies of the procedure, stating, "Following thorough evaluation, it was determined that the couples were ideal candidates for a swap transplant as their blood types did not match. This innovative approach allowed Mr. Chavan's wife to donate a portion of her liver to Mr. Sarode, while Mr. Sarode's wife reciprocated the gesture by donating her liver to Mr. Chavan."
Dr. Sanglodkar emphasised the critical nature of the procedure, highlighting the patients' deteriorating health conditions and the necessity for timely intervention. Thanks to advancements in liver transplantation techniques, both surgeries were conducted simultaneously, lasting 10 hours each. Remarkably, the recipients were discharged within 14 days post-surgery, while the donors recovered within 7 days.
Dr. Ameet Mandot, Head of Clinical Lead Adult Hepatology and Liver Transplant at Global Hospitals Parel, Mumbai, underscored the significance of swap transplantation in addressing the shortage of eligible donors. He emphasised that this innovative approach not only saves lives but also expands the donor pool, offering hope to countless patients in need of life-saving procedures.
Expressing gratitude to the medical team and Global Hospital for the transformative intervention, both couples have resumed their normal lives with newfound appreciation. Their heartwarming gesture of organ donation has not only saved lives but also exemplified the spirit of altruism and compassion.
Dr. Vivek Talaulikar, COO of IHH Healthcare India, lauded Global Hospital's pioneering efforts in transplantation, describing the successful swap transplant as a historic achievement. He emphasised that such milestones not only demonstrate the hospital's dedication to medical excellence but also pave the way for transformative changes in healthcare, offering hope to patients worldwide.
