PM Modi Chairs Meeting to Assess Heat Wave Preparedness Ahead of General Elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently chaired a high-level meeting to assess the nation's readiness for the impending heat wave season. The meeting delved into the temperature projections for the period spanning April to June 2024, foreseeing above-normal maximum temperatures across much of the country, particularly in Central India and the western peninsular region.

During the session, a comprehensive review of the health sector's preparedness ensued, focusing on the availability of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and potable water. Emphasis was placed on the timely dissemination of crucial Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) material, particularly in regional languages, across various media platforms including television, radio, and social media.

Given the anticipation of a hotter-than-usual summer coinciding with the General Elections, the importance of translating and widely disseminating advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in regional languages was underscored.

Prime Minister Modi underscored the imperative of a whole-of-government approach, stressing the necessity for seamless coordination among Central, State, and District administrations, as well as across various ministries. He emphasized the significance of raising awareness alongside ensuring hospitals' preparedness and advocated for swift detection and containment of forest fires.

The meeting witnessed the participation of key stakeholders including the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), and representatives from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The collective effort and proactive measures discussed in the meeting aim to mitigate the potential impact of the impending heat wave season and ensure the well-being of citizens, especially amidst the backdrop of the upcoming General Elections.
