SISA Hosts Global Standard Workshop on Knee Joint Preservation

SISA (Sai Institute of Sports Injury & Arthroscopy) marked its Silver Jubilee with a two-day extravaganza, hosting the prestigious Global Standard workshop on Knee Joint Preservation and Live Surgery Conference 2024. The event, held on April 13th and 14th at HICC, Hyderabad, showcased cutting-edge advancements in Knee Realignment Surgery and allied fields. This marked the 14th edition of the conference organized by SISA, underscoring its commitment to pushing the boundaries of orthopedic surgery.

Drawing over 400 orthopedic surgeons from across the nation, the conference provided a platform for experts to delve into the finer nuances and state-of-the-art techniques in knee joint preservation. Spearheaded by luminaries such as Dr. K Raghuveer Reddy, Managing Director of SISA and Organizing Secretary of the Live Surgery Conference 2024, alongside international stalwarts like Dr. Adrian Wilson from the UK and Dr. Kristian Kley from Germany, the event promised insights into achieving optimal outcomes through innovative approaches.

The focus of the conference centered on knee joint preservation, emphasizing the importance of exploring alternatives to knee replacement surgery, particularly for younger, more active patients. While knee replacement remains the go-to option for those with advanced arthritis, the spotlight was on advanced knee-saving procedures like Realignment operations, Meniscus repair, Ligament, and Cartilage surgery.

A highlight of the conference was the introduction of a groundbreaking surgical technique known as High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO). This procedure, showcased during the event, involves strategic bone cutting below or above the knee joint to realign the leg, thereby redistributing weight and alleviating pain. HTO not only extends the lifespan of a partially damaged knee but also offers a viable alternative to total knee replacement, providing patients with a quicker recovery time and the opportunity to resume an active lifestyle.

Speaking at the event, Dr. K Raghuveer Reddy underscored the significance of knee joint preservation in the Silver Jubilee year of SISA. He stressed the importance of exploring joint repair options, particularly for patients with partially injured joints, and highlighted the role of HTO in delaying or avoiding total joint replacement.

Dr. Kristian Kley echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the growing popularity of Osteotomy as a treatment for knee arthritis. He pointed out the limitations of knee replacement surgery, particularly for active individuals, and highlighted the high satisfaction rates associated with Osteotomy.

Dr. Adrian Wilson reiterated the benefits of Osteotomy in prolonging the need for joint replacement, allowing patients to maintain a high quality of life and return to normal activities.

Knee preservation surgery offers a ray of hope for individuals with mild to moderate-stage arthritis, particularly those under 55, athletes, and patients with specific knee deformities. With advancements like HTO, SISA continues to lead the charge in revolutionizing orthopedic care and improving patient outcomes.
