UN Secretary-General António Guterres Urges Finance Ministers to Lead Ambitious Climate Action

In his message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres underscores the critical role of finance ministers in addressing climate change and its economic impacts. He highlights how climate disasters, such as storms, floods, fires, and droughts, are not only environmental crises but also economic disasters, draining funds that could otherwise be allocated to vital sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Guterres emphasizes the urgent need for action to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, stating that ambitious national climate action plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), are crucial. These plans should align with the 1.5-degree limit, cover all emissions, and map a just pathway to phase out fossil fuels while embracing renewable energy.

Finance ministers play a vital role in designing these national climate plans, which should not only support national development but also spur sustainable development. Guterres urges finance ministers to mobilize finance for NDCs and develop policies and regulations that provide investors with clarity and certainty, such as effective carbon pricing and ending fossil fuel subsidies.

He welcomes the Coalition's Call to Action on involving finance ministers in NDCs and calls for action to fix the financial system, ensure developed countries fulfill their promises on finance, and strengthen financial instruments and multilateral development banks to mobilize private finance.

Guterres asserts that the end of the fossil fuel age is inevitable and emphasizes the need for finance to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and build resilient economies. He calls on finance ministers to lead the charge for ambitious climate action, stating that the world is counting on them to ensure a sustainable future for people and the planet.
