Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohiya Hospital has taken a crucial step by inaugurating a Heat Stroke Clinic to offer prompt emergency care to individuals affected by heat stroke. The clinic is well-equipped with facilities including ice immersion and ICU provisions, featuring two beds.

Explaining the significance of this initiative, Professor Ajay Chouhan from the Department of Medicine at RML Hospital highlighted the connection between climate change and heat-related illnesses. He emphasized the escalating temperatures attributed to the emission of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, leading to frequent and severe heat waves.

Heat stroke, he stressed, is a serious condition that can prove fatal if not promptly treated, with up to eighty out of a hundred cases resulting in death without immediate medical intervention.

The treatment protocol for heat stroke, as outlined by RML Hospital, involves simple yet life-saving measures. Professor Chouhan urged the public to play an active role in saving lives by taking immediate action if they encounter someone suffering from heat stroke.

He advised moving the affected individual to a shaded area, cooling their body by applying ice or water around the thighs and shoulders, and swiftly transporting them to the nearest hospital for professional medical attention.

Heat strokes can occur in two forms: exertional, typically resulting from strenuous physical activity, and classical or routine, which predominantly affects the elderly and children. For both demographics, evaporative and immersion cooling techniques are effective.

RML Hospital has prioritized immersion cooling for exertional heat stroke cases, boasting the installation of two tubs, each capable of holding three hundred liters of water, along with an ice production capacity of up to 250 kilograms.

With the establishment of the Heat Stroke Clinic and the dissemination of essential treatment information, RML Hospital aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of heat-related illnesses and safeguard the well-being of the community.
