BCG Vaccine

It is a live bacterial vaccine. The vaccine is recommended in the prevention of primary - tuberculosis, especially to prevent the most serious manifestations. BCG or Bacille Calmette Guerin vaccine is a potential vaccine for the prevention of TB (tuberculosis diseases). This vaccine was discovered in 1921 by French scientists, Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin. It can be administered intradermally to infants who are vulnerable to the disease.

Indications

Protection against TB.


Dosage

-0.1ml intradermal from birth of 2 weeks; on the upper part of the left arm. Note : The vaccination causes a nodule at the site in about 4-6 weeks. This nodule gradually settles down but sometimes may break down and form a sore with some discharge. This sore needs to be cleaned with either soap and water or plain water. -The recommended dose for the BCG vaccine is 0.05 ml for neonates and 0.1 ml for babies and children over one year of age.


Contra-Indications

It is contraindicated in organ transplant patients and immunosuppressed patients.


Special Precautions

It is not recommended to use the BCG vaccine during pregnancy.


Side Effects

Abdominal discomfort, fever, vomiting, breathlessness, and swollen lymph nodes.


Drug Interactions

Corticosteroid medications, anti-cancer drugs, antibiotics, vitamins, and other TB medicines.
