Spectinomycin

It is a bacteriostatic drug structurally different from aminoglycosides.

Indications

Treatment of gonorrhea caused by strains resistant to first line drugs and also in a penicillin allergic patient.

Dosage

Adults : 2 g by deep i.m. injection. Children : If no alternative treatment, 40mg per kg.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions

Anaphylaxis may occur. The diluent provided contains benzyl alcohol which has been associated with fatal gasping syndrome in infants. Safety in children has not been established.

Side Effects

A reduction in urine output, pain at injection site, nausea, chills, fever, dizziness, insomnia, urticaria, decrease in haemoglobin

Drug Interactions

Botilinum toxin, lithium.
