Patients can't take law in their own hands, says DMA

The Delhi Medical Association has demanded a central act to prevent assaults on doctors. “There are existing laws to stop violence against doctors but there is need to enact a central law which can prevent these assaults,” said Dr Girish Tyagi, President, DMA.

Around 100 doctors engaged with DMA marched in protest from DMA, Daryaganj, to Raj Ghat to show their solidarity with West Bengal doctors who have been on strike for five days against brutal assaults on their colleagues in NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Dr Tyagi said, “We are ready to provide services but we can treat patients only in safe working environment. If a doctor’s life is in danger, how can he provide treatment? We want only proper security in government and private hospitals.”

Dr Tyagi added that patients have various methods to complain against doctors. “They have consumer courts and civil courts for complaints but how can they take law in their own hands?” he asked.
