PIRIBEDIL

It is a Dopamine agonist.

Indications

Cerebrovascular insufficiency, Cerebral aging: memory & vigilance disorders, giddiness in the elderly, disorders of intellectual function, concentration, tendency to depression; tinnitus, hypoacusis & vertigo; suggested in retinal ischaemic accidents, macular degeneration & for improvement in visual acuity & visual contrast sensitivity. Parkinson's disease


Dosage

one tablet daily with meals. In severe forms one tablet twice daily with meals. Parkinson's disease: One to four tablets daily, depending on patient's response, in divided doses with meals.


Contra-Indications

Cardiovascular collapse, myocardial infarction in its acute phase, pregnancy.


Special Precautions

Do not administer concurrently with centrally acting dopaminergic antogonists e.g., neuroleptics - haloperidol. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Not usually prescribed. Lactation: Should not be used. Elderly: Safe.


Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upsets.


Drug Interactions

Dopamine antagonists like phenothiazines and haloperidol may antagonise effects of piribedil.
