Clofazimine

Clofazimine

it is a fast soluble phenazine dye and often effective in patients intolerant or resistant to other anti leprosy drugs. It exerts an anti-inflammatory effect when given in proper dose & prevents the development of erythema nodosum (lepra reactions).

Indications

Leprosy.


Dosage

300 mg spread over a week. In sulphone resistant cases: 600 mg, weekly preferably after meals. Lepra reactions: 200 mg daily for 3 weeks or as required.


Contra-Indications

1st trimester of pregnancy.


Special Precautions

Renal or hepatic disorders. Paediatrics: Contraindicated in infants. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Not prescribed without indication. Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Development of red and black pigmentation leading to discolouration of skin, hair and secretions. Dry skin, pruritus, G.I upset, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, reduce or space out dosage.


Drug Interactions

Ototoxic and nephrotoxic drugs potentiates their toxicity.
