Diphenoxylate+Atropine

It is an opioid, chemically related to pethidine; used exclusively as constipating agent; action similar to codeine. The antidiarrhoeal action is most prominent, but CNS effects do occur. Atropine is added in non pharmacological dose to discourage abuse.

Indications

Symptomatic relief of diarrhoea.


Dosage

2.5-5 mg 6 hrly. Children over 6 yrs:0.25 mg of diphenoxylate/kg body wt.daily in divided doses.


Contra-Indications

Children below 6 yrs, jaundice, pseudomembranous colitis. Atropine intolerance, diphenoxylate allergy


Special Precautions

Hepatic disorders, pregnancy, lactation, ulcerative colitis, electrolyte imbalance & oral rehydration to be checked.


Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, depression, euphoria, allergy, lethargy.
