BIRAC offers funding for startups fighting diseases

Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a non-profit public sector enterprise established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has recently announced extending a helping hand to start-ups in the country.

In a communication, BIRAC stated that the move is aimed at bolstering the emerging biotech sector by supporting research and innovation.

The PSU has announced a fresh funding opportunity dubbed "BIG 24th" to aid startups in combating infectious diseases and advancing digital health solutions.

According to the communication, startups can apply for funding under this initiative until May 31, 2024.

BIRAC is particularly interested in projects addressing tuberculosis, vector-borne diseases, disease surveillance, antimicrobial resistance, and the intersection of climate change and health, the communication added.

For tuberculosis, the PSU is seeking simple diagnostic tests suitable for resource-limited settings. In the realm of vector-borne diseases, they require reliable tools capable of detecting multiple diseases, especially in areas with limited healthcare infrastructure.

Additionally, it is on the lookout for robust digital platforms to enhance infectious disease tracking and management. Projects focused on swiftly detecting antimicrobial-resistant infections and developing adaptable healthcare solutions in the face of climate change are also encouraged to apply.

Selected startups will receive support from both BIRAC and the Indian Health Fund (IHF). This assistance includes guidance in areas such as incubation, validation, commercialization, and mentorship, empowering startups to make significant strides in the fight against diseases.
