Study Suggests Adjusting Calcium Intake Timing Could Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Risk

A recent study published in BMC Public Health suggests that adjusting calcium intake timing could potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers examined data from over 36,000 American adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys between 2003 and 2018.


The study, which excluded individuals under 20, pregnant women, calcium supplement users, and those with incomplete data, focused on the calcium intake from morning and evening meals. Ultimately, the findings indicated that spreading calcium intake over both meals was associated with the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, substituting a portion of calcium intake from dinner with that at breakfast showed a 6% reduction in overall risk.

However, the authors caution that other factors not accounted for in the study could influence results. They emphasize the need for further research involving diverse cohorts to validate these findings.

Calcium plays a crucial role in bone health, muscle contraction, blood clotting, and heart muscle function. Given the significant global impact of cardiovascular disease, understanding the relationship between calcium intake timing and heart health is vital.

Experts suggest that circadian rhythms, which regulate nutrient absorption, may influence how the body processes calcium. While some advocate for calcium supplements, registered dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick emphasizes the importance of individualized decisions based on health needs and risks. She advises consulting with a healthcare provider to determine the suitability of calcium supplementation.

Overall, maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium sources may mitigate the need for supplements. However, certain populations, such as older individuals at risk of bone-related conditions like osteoporosis, may benefit from supplementation to support bone health.
