Fortis Memorial Research Institute Empowers Thalassemia Awareness on World Thalassemia Day

Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram hosted a significant event, "Thalassemia-Free: Together We Can," on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day. This special program aimed to shed light on thalassemia and featured survivor narratives alongside the presence of renowned celebrities and actors.

Veteran Bollywood actor Raza Murad graced the event as the Chief Guest, accompanied by TV actresses Donal Bisht and Neetha Shetty as Guests of Honor. Children who triumphed over thalassemia through treatment at Fortis shared their courageous journeys during the event.

The event highlighted the transformative impact of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT), also known as Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), on young warriors like Lavisha Jain, Kashish, Aryan Dattani, and Kavish Menariya. Sibling donors and unrelated donor registries played vital roles in facilitating successful transplants.

Raza Murad applauded Fortis Healthcare's initiative to raise awareness about thalassemia and stressed the importance of proper treatment and care for those affected by the condition.

TV actress Donal Bisht emphasized the need for collective efforts in preventing thalassemia and advocated for increased screening, especially in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.

Neetha Shetty highlighted the challenges faced by thalassemia patients in accessing safe blood transfusions and called for premarital screening and genetic counseling to prevent the transmission of the disease.

Dr. Vikas Dua, Principal Director at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, shed light on India's alarming thalassemia burden and underscored the role of advanced technologies like CRISPR gene editing in combating the condition.

Dr. Rahul Bhargava, Chief BMT at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, emphasized the importance of early screening and testing for thalassemia and advocated for collaborative efforts to eradicate the disease burden.

These narratives exemplify how BMT is offering hope and a brighter future for thalassemia patients in India, with financial assistance from various organizations playing a pivotal role in facilitating this transformative therapy.
