WHO Results Report 2023: Milestones Achieved Amid Global Health Challenges

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its most comprehensive Results Report to date, highlighting significant achievements in public health amidst escalating global humanitarian health needs driven by conflict, climate change, and disease outbreaks. The report precedes the 2024 Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly, scheduled from May 27 to June 1, 2024, underscoring the organization's commitment to transparency and accountability.

With a revised Programme Budget for 2022–2023 totaling US$ 6726.1 million, WHO has incorporated lessons learned from the pandemic response and addressed emerging health priorities. The report draws from 174 country reports provided by 96% of WHO country offices, showcasing progress towards 46 targets while acknowledging persistent challenges.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, noted the world's deviation from most triple billion targets and health-related Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the need for concerted action to accelerate progress. Despite challenges, advancements have been made in areas such as healthier populations, universal health coverage (UHC), and health emergencies protection.

Progress toward healthier populations includes improvements in air quality and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene measures, with the target of 1 billion more people enjoying better health and well-being likely to be met by 2025. UHC efforts have seen 30% of countries advancing in essential health service coverage and financial protection, notably driven by increased HIV service coverage.

In terms of emergencies protection, although vaccination coverage for high-priority pathogens has improved compared to pandemic-related disruptions, it has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. The Pandemic Fund disbursed US$ 338 million in 2023, supporting 37 countries in responding to acute events and scaling up life-saving health operations.

Noteworthy achievements include the administration of the world's first malaria vaccine, RTS,S/AS01, to over two million children, reducing mortality by 13%. Additionally, the availability of all-oral treatment regimens for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis marks a significant milestone in tuberculosis treatment.

WHO's initiatives have contributed to progress in various areas, including tobacco use reduction, antimicrobial resistance action plans, and cervical cancer elimination efforts. Looking ahead, the Programme Budget for 2024–2025 aims to accelerate progress towards meeting triple billion targets, balancing investment in normative functions with strengthening country offices.

Commitment to sustainable financing is evident through Member States' adoption of a path to increase assessed contributions and the launch of the Investment Round to secure resources for WHO's core work. Collaborative efforts with donors and partners will continue through an inclusive engagement process leading to a high-level financing event in late 2024.

The WHO Results Report underscores the organization's commitment to addressing global health challenges while striving for equitable access to healthcare and sustainable development.
